Our bus had to wind its way up the mountain to Santa Elena, which is 16 km from the centre of Medellin. The climate here is perfect for growing flowers. Every August they have a giant parade where hundreds of local farmers walk with humongous flower arrangements strapped to their backs. They call these arrangements sillletas.
We loved learning about the colourful flowers. It was very relaxing and a local family cooked up a delicious lunch of beans and rice. We also met their basset hound named Lucy. We didn’t have to drive back down the mountain because Medellin has a public cable car system. That was much nicer than the bus. You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom.

Many years ago they had to carry their flowers from the mountain to the city to sell them. The easiest way was to carry them on their backs. Now they carry them on their backs in beautiful displays for the annual festival. Some of the flowers are like the ones we have in Canada such as St. Anne's Lacy, and some were herbs like sage.

Today the temperature reached 35° and being by the sea it was slightly humid. There is a nice breeze when you are close to the shore.

The garden had many types of orchids. We do have about 50 types of orchids in Ontario, but there are thousands of different types here in Colombia.

The frames are wood and rope and they would be like carrying a couple of medium sized bags of potatoes on your back!
