We love museums. Today we spent our entire day visiting the Acropolis and the new Acropolis Museum. The museum, as well as the Acropolis site itself, is involved in extensive restoration projects. These have already gone on longer than it actually took to build the Parthenon. Actually, my favourite structure at the Acropolis wasn't the Parthenon, but the Erechtheion. The six female figures (Carytids) are actually support columns as well as being exceptional carvings (the originals are in the museum).
#1Although we think of Ancient Greek structures as being shiny pure white marble, the buildings would have been heavily decorated and painted. The museum is currently researching what this would have looked like.
#2 The Greeks call the Elgin Marbles the Parthenon Marbles....and if you happen to be talking to the British Government--the Greeks want them back.
An amazing day. Hot, Hot, Hot! An ice cold lemonade never tasted better than it did after climbing Mars Hill. Oh, and we learned the word for Thank You (we had to write it on our hand and practice it all day--Greek is tough).
You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom.
