Marrakesh Cobra Encounter

Marrakesh was a part of the trip I was not looking forward to. In ALL the videos we watched on Morocco it is portrayed as a busy, somewhat aggressive, city. Although the Jemma El Market is definitely hectic, we have found the city delightful and manageable. In fact, we ended our evening sipping mint tea (no actual tea in it) on a rooftop overlooking the night market. Tomorrow night we may even have dinner at stall #100. The vendor promised us that 100 is a lucky number😄

Dad had his cobra encounter. Check out the picture--you have to wonder who has their eyes on the snake.

You Are Always in Our Prayers. Love Mom.

Looks beautiful - I notice that Dad is maintaining some distance from the cobras.

Have you seen any of these exotic performances before in other places that you've visited?

We have seen snake charmers before in Rajasthan, India. Along with the Cobras they often have non-venomous snakes to put on your neck.

Every time you go around a corner you feel like you are seeing new and amazing things. This includes things like the snow capped Atlas Mountains, the different types of clothes, and the tall towers of the mosques. One modern but amazing thing was in Marrakesh all the cell phone towers were disguised as palm trees.

While I was not really that scared of the snake, I was nervous about dealing with the snake charmer. They make their living by having people pay to have their picture taken with the snake. They have a reputation of being a little aggressive in bargaining and so you must be very clear on the price before you take any pictures.

No, I did not touch the cobra. The "Snake charmer" would occasionally reposition the snake by grabbing the body, he also kept a cover nearby at all times. It did not really feel all that scary being beside the charmer, notice that I am slightly further from the snake than he is.

The food stalls are on wheels, sort of like a food truck. They are pulled into the square each day around 5:00pm and set up tables and chairs and start cooking.

How is the food in Africa ?

Africa is a huge continent, and this is only my second country. I loved the food of Ethiopia, spice and lots of variety.
Morocco the food has been different, they cook much of it in clay conical pots. To be honest I find it a bit bland. This morning on my run I tried their breakfast soup made out of fava beans, flavoured with olive oil, once again bland. So I then washed it down with fresh squeezed orange juice (only 4 dirham about 50 cents). The fruits have been wonderful especially the oranges and we frequently passed trees covered with oranges.

I have got lost occasionally, but never for too long. One of the great advantages of modern travel is that you can download many ares of google maps and use the GPS on your phone to find your location. Morocco is one of the countries that does not have google maps available for downloading but I was able to download a Morocco map app. This is most useful when I am out on a run. For example this morning I went through the main square into the winding alleyways of the soukes (markets).

The market cobra wasn't a king cobra. Thank goodness.
