Fernando Botero is probably the most famous living artist and sculptor from Medellin Colombia. Some people think he paints things really fat, but what he is really doing is playing with volume and perspective to draw attention to the details in his work.
My favourite painting at the Museum Antioquia was Pedro, which he created in memory of his son. I also thought you would like to see his representation of a bull fight—they still have bull fights in Colombia. A really fun room at the gallery had mirrors that gave you an idea of what you might look like if Botero drew a picture of you. Can you imagine your Botero portrait? Do you find his art interesting? I heard you had quite a bit of snow—the weather here is beautiful and warm. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

Botero is still alive and still painting. His son died in a car accident, and Botero's hands were injured in the accident. The painting of his son was the first painting he did once he was healed enough to paint. It was painted in 1980.

We had a very limited amount of time in Museum Antioquia so only looked at works by Botero. We spent some time at the Botero museum in Bogota were he has donated his personal collection which includes paintings by many famous artists.

When he was twelve he went to a matador (bull fighter) school for two years. At age 16 he started to draw illustrations for a newspaper. He used the money he made to continue to study art.

Back in 1992 Botero estimated that he had painted over 1000 paintings. So by now the number must be much higher.

Sadly his son was killed in a car accident when he was just 4 years old. Botero's hands were injured in the accident.

How long do the paintings take to make? Did the room make you look more volumed.

I am not sure how long each takes, but his method is too let each colour dry before painting the next and the canvases are very large so they must take weeks to paint.

We have been to two Botero museums, at the first we rented an audio guide, which is a great way to learn about art, and the artist.

Botero has painted thousands of pictures but has told people that this is his favourite. I think he likes looking at it and remembering his son playing with his toys.
