What a crazy day yesterday! Just after breakfast we met a couple from Michigan that had a rental car. They were going exploring for the day and invited us to tag along; so off we headed on an unplanned adventure. We didn’t get back until 9:30 in the evening. We saw chocolate farms, a place that harvests tropical plants for medicine, a fishing village, a national park, fabulous scenery and the Belize Zoo. I think you would have liked the Belize Zoo.
The animals are all from Belize and here they do have names and stories. Sylvia was the rescued jaguar. She got in trouble for hunting dogs and would have been shot if the zoo hadn’t saved her. She looked happy in her habitat. They also have a Harpy Eagle breeding program. They are considered one of the largest eagles. They can grow up to 104 cm tall. This male was about 76 cm tall. I’m not sure what he is eating. I thought it might be a rat but I think it is actually a baby opossum —apparently that is one of their favourite foods. We have a long bus ride to Guatemala tomorrow. In the meantime we are enjoying paradise. You are always in my prayers. Love Mom.

They had a bunch of different ones. They gave Ray some Sour Sop leaves. They said they help with cancers.

The Harpy in the picture is a young male. When he gets a bit older they are going to breed him. I believe he was raised in captivity.

Around how many animals are in the zoo? Is it as big as the zoo in Toronto?

Much, much smaller than the Toronto zoo, but what makes is special is that all the animals there are native to Belize.

Did the zoo have more than a couple species. Were there many animals of the same species or just a couple.

Did the jaguar live close to the town before it was rehabbed?

Yes, that is why she got in trouble for eating people's dogs.

Many friends thought the jaguar looked like a cheetah.

Cheetahs live in Africa and are smaller and faster. They used to have a black Jaguar too but it died.

Do you have any photos of the chocolate farm? Did they show you how they make their chocolate? What was Ray's favourite chocolate? Ginger and chocolate was your favourite....did taste sweet or salty?

Sorry ...we didn’t take any photos at the chocolate farm...I think we were too busy eating a samples. We went through the gardens but this place didn’t really show us the processing. A few years ago in Costa we went to a workshop where we made our own chocolate using a grinder ..it made me love chocolate even more.
