Today is 2 Miaziah 2007 (Ethiopian Calendar). On this special Good Friday we visited the Debre Damo monastery near Axum. This sixth century Monastery is situated at the top of a plateau. The climb is quite steep. The last fifty feet can only be accomplished by scaling the cliff using a leather rope. So, that is where I remained--at the end of the rope. However, not simply because I was unable to scale the cliff, but because Debre Damo does not allow females to visit the monastery. Even female animals are not allowed to enter. Still felt blessed ALMOST at the top of a plateau in Ethiopia munching on arrowroot cookies in the shade of the rocks.
You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom.
P.S. Congratulations to Dad, Nathanael, and Thaddeus for scampering up that cliff with squirrel-like agility
Today was one huge archeological romp! We visited the site Ethiopia claims to house the Ark of the Covenant, some of the largest stele in the world, the palace of Queen Sheba, and numerous royal tombs that were engineering wonders.
Our guide provided us with information that was a combination of oral traditions, archeology, and written history. Ethiopians believe that Balthazar, King of Ethiopia, was one of the three wise men. Today in Axum we visited the tomb of King Balthazar. Two degrees of separation from Baby Jesus! Until I knew the story it was just a hole in the rocks.
The more I learn the more I don't know, but I'm listening to the stones. You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom.
