A short walk from our hostel and we were at the Mestrovic Gallery in the sculptor’s former mansion. Ivan Mestrovic sketched the original inspiration for his work titled Job while he was imprisoned by the Ustase in 1941 and the sculpture itself was carved by the artist in exile during World War II. Although the powerful piece technically dramatizes the religious theme Job, commentators say that Mestrovic drew on his experiences to characterize “a silent scream against the insanity of war”. It is very moving regardless which context you view it in.
After a long and complicated bus ride we are near the Plitvice Falls. It is a lot cooler here with kind of an Austrian feel. Quite a contrast from Split. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

Would you travel back to split again sometime in the future?

Split was beautiful, especially the mmorning after we arrived when the sun was shining. There are probably things I would still like to see, like on our way out of town we passed an amazing looking Roman aqueduct. But, there are so many places in the world left to see, I will likely not get back to Split.

When I was in the Bosnian mountains I took a crazy Jeep ride. It was extremely scary and we where so close to the edge of the mountain! I hope your bus ride wasn’t as crazy as my Jeep ride!!!

We stayed on main roads so it wasn't very scary.

Only two main art gallerys. We have seen some great art "in situ", in the place the painting was made for such as churches.

Mestrovic chose to represent the biblical character Job, because his story is about suffering. The artist liked representing women enjoying music and dance.

Well, we are not on an organized tour of any kind. We figure out local buses, find places to stay, and mainly check out grocery stores for our food (occasionally eat out) so I guess you could call us “Pay as you go”...if we want to do something we pay for it .

1. I suppose not all of Austria is the same, but when we were in Austria there were lots of beautiful green hills. There was also a lot of agriculture. The houses were A-frame with balconies on every level that went all the way across. They also served a lot of potatoe dishes and sausages. That is what it was like in our small town near Plitvice too!
