We have arrived in Colombia. Bogota is a busy big city of eight million people.
Today was our first experience with the TransMilenio or bus system. It is like Toronto’s metro except it is above ground with very long and very fast buses driving in their own special lanes. People are jammed in. We had a lot of help from the Colombian riders learning how find the stops and push our way through. Everyone has been so kind. The Street Art Tour taught us a lot. Some of the Street Art the government lets stay up and some of it gets painted over. There is so much of it that it seems they must start painting again as soon as it is erased. Some of the paintings are traditional, some just pretty, and some are meant to have a message. What do you think the message of this mural is? You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

How much street art have you seen? Does it compare to street art in Toronto?

Bogata has both a lot of great street art and graffiti. We only touched on the street art in one small area. They have art done by artists from around the world. Perhaps the thing that is different from Toronto is there is more political and social commentary here in Bogata.

This one was in the downtown area where the street art is more political.

Do you see any street art that seems to have an inspirational message?

Yes, one that comes to mind included "No Apagaran mi voz", which means I will continue to speak out... my voice will not be stopped.

How do you know which paintings share a message?

Perhaps the easiest way was by having a guide who is very connected to the street art scene. Some however are so clear that you can see their message against violence and explotation.

So hard to pick, I think mine was the work done by an artist who goes by the tag dllu. Just found his work clear and interested that he is a professor at one of the local universities.

So much to choose from. I did like some of the street art that was three dimensional, small masks that just looked like they were part of the building or paper machete sculptures hanging on second storey ledge.
