We practice our Spanish with our Taxi driver on the way to the TelefériQo. He is happy that we have returned to Quito—he is proud of his country. The 18 minute cable car takes us up the side of Volcán Pichincha. We are high up...very high up...about 4100 m above sea level. Then we start to hike..higher and higher. We don’t quite make it to the summit, but we are above the clouds. One minute sun, next mist, then tiny pellets of ice rain down. The weather changes very quickly this high up. We can feel the wind take our breath away. Tiny finch scrounge for food in the high altitude grasslands. It is a perfect day.
Tomorrow we fly to the Galapagos and board our boat. This trip is already awesome. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

Was the cable car ride fun? Did you see any birds when you were on the cable car? Was it scary looking down?

The cable car was really high and we were looking down at the top of the trees. It wasn’t too scary because it wasn’t windy.

Plumbeous Sierra Finch is the grey bird. Just birds at the top of the volcanoe.

How hard is it to speak Spanish. Is the cable car close to the mountains or not close. Was it just you guys in it or other people in it. Where you controlling it or was somebody in it that controlling it. How old was the cable car. I hope you have a good trip

The cable car is high above the ground. There are emergency stops controlled at the top and bottom. We were with 4 other people...it holds six. It was opened in 2005.

The national parks people restrict the number of people on the islands so it isn’t too crowded.
