This morning we day-tripped to the royal necropolis of France. The Basilica of St. Denis houses the remains of almost all of the monarchs. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were initially buried elsewhere, after being beheaded, but in the 1800's were relocated and recognized along with the other royalty.
The church and crypts are fascinating to say the least. My favourite story was of poor Louis XVII. First he was only very briefly a king (even this is disputed), second he died extremely young, but the final tragedy was that the doctor performing his autopsy stole his heart. Now, where the heart went from there is the stuff of legends. Apparently at one point it even resided in Spain. However, by1975 the alleged heart of Louis was returned to France and kept in a crystal vase at the royal crypt in the Saint Denis Basilica. In 1999 DNA testing using a strand of Marie Antoinette's hair proved definitively that the heart indeed belongs to a descendant of royalty. I guess that is as close as the poor fellow is going to get to finding his heart. Anyways, there it was on April 25th 2016, still sitting there in its crystal vase.
Dad discovered Paul's today. It is a French boulangerie/cafe chain that offers a combo deal on an espresso and pain au chocolat--now I may never get him on that plane home😄
