My brain was definitely in overload at St. Mark’s Basilica. The interior (you can’t take pictures) is covered with mosaics and tourists. You are not sure where to look or where to step. Then we climbed up to the loggia, where far fewer tourist go, and it was like we were in the heavens. We were right next to the most amazing mosaics and there was a terrace open to the outside where we could stand with the bronze horses and look over St Mark’s square. The tourists looked like tiny specs.
St Mark’s is famous for more than its Mosaics. In 828 AD relics were more than just religious symbols. A city that had a significant relic had prestige and power. Two Venetian merchants headed off to Alexandria to “rescue” the relics of St Mark. Legend has it that they were smuggled to Venice in a pork barrel. The rest is history and the reason for so many lion statues—the symbol of St Mark. Still Loving Venice and Gelato. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

There were 120 Dodges one after the other and of course all the people that went with each of them.

Today we took a day trip to Padua (which isn’t actually part of Venice) Tomorrow we are going to Murano and Burano which are islands in Venice.

Sometimes you can’t take pictures of art with your flash on because it damages it, but I am guessing they don’t let you take pictures in St Marks because it would slow the crowds down even more.

1. Although there are no historical records tradition has it that the original Venetians were fleeing from successive invaders.

There are 4 of them and they are each over 4 m high. The replicas are now on St Mark’s...the originals are in the museum....we saw both sets.

No one is quite sure. They were looted from Rome and the best guess is 200 or 300 AD

It is hard to compare because the things we are seeing are so different, but the biggest surprise was Slovenia...it was so much better than I thought it was going to be.

Relics are usually the body, or part of the body of a saint. In this case 2 Venetian traders were in Eygpt. They rescued ("stole") the body of Saint Mark (he wrote the book of Mark). They smuggled it out of Eygpt in a vat of salt pork knowing the Muslim guards would not search there. The body of Mark was reburied in St Marks Basilica. The lion (often with wings) is the symbol of Saint Mark and are found all over Venice.
