Heading home to Canada in the morning. It has been an unforgettable journey. I hope everyone has a special memory of something that happened along the way. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. Smiles all around—these kids love to Dance! What a privilege to visit a school project in the Boquilla. Thank you to the AMDSB blogging partner classes that provided the school supplies we were able to drop off. They were needed and appreciated. Today you helped make a difference.
You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. Our bus had to wind its way up the mountain to Santa Elena, which is 16 km from the centre of Medellin. The climate here is perfect for growing flowers. Every August they have a giant parade where hundreds of local farmers walk with humongous flower arrangements strapped to their backs. They call these arrangements sillletas.
We loved learning about the colourful flowers. It was very relaxing and a local family cooked up a delicious lunch of beans and rice. We also met their basset hound named Lucy. We didn’t have to drive back down the mountain because Medellin has a public cable car system. That was much nicer than the bus. You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom. Fernando Botero is probably the most famous living artist and sculptor from Medellin Colombia. Some people think he paints things really fat, but what he is really doing is playing with volume and perspective to draw attention to the details in his work.
My favourite painting at the Museum Antioquia was Pedro, which he created in memory of his son. I also thought you would like to see his representation of a bull fight—they still have bull fights in Colombia. A really fun room at the gallery had mirrors that gave you an idea of what you might look like if Botero drew a picture of you. Can you imagine your Botero portrait? Do you find his art interesting? I heard you had quite a bit of snow—the weather here is beautiful and warm. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. We are now in the Manizales region of Colombia. It is very different than being in the city of Bogota. There are many opportunities to walk in the beautiful nature reserves. At home we have orchids in pots from Zehr’s or Food Basics, but here orchids grow on the trees. They are epiphytes. That means they don’t hurt the trees they grow on.
We have seen many unusual birds and butterflies, but probably the most unique was the Glass Winged Butterfly. You could see right through the wings—just like glass. Tomorrow we have a very long bus ride. I am excited to see more of the scenery of Colombia. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. |
