As our plane approaches the runway we see giant cactus trees dotting the barren landscape. We get our bags and head off in a dingy for eight days on the Monserrat. What—snorkelling already? Fitted for our wet suits we immediately motor out to find the White Tipped Sharks. Is that one? Another one? Five White Tipped Sharks! We are swimming with the sharks—how cool is that? A bit of rest and snack and off to an island to visit the sea lions. Some of them are scrapping and playing. Most are snoozing in the white sand. There are so many—babies, mommas, and really big males. Occasionally they bark at us if we get too close to the pups. Back to the boat to watch the Sunset set from the top deck. We can see several Galapagos sharks just under the surface of the water around our boat. What an amazing day. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

The one in the picture is still a pup, probably about two months old. Galapagos sea lions can live to be 25 years old.

Did the seals smell? How big were they? Were they chubby.

Yes when you get close to a colony of sea lions on land there is a strong odour. The pups are smaller but a big male can weigh up to 250 kgs and be up to 250 cm long.

It appears they can swim shortly after birth but not very well. They spend there first five months near the shore growing and playing in the water to improve their swimming. At five months the start to learn how to hunt for food.

Was it scary when you swam with the sharks?

Not very scary, the sharks kept their distance and were reef sharks not known for attacking swimmers. We did see some Galapagos sharks which eat seals and are a bit more of a threat but the boats stayed closer when they were around.

Over the whole trip hundreds. They live in groups of one male, up to twelve females and their pups. In one video you can see that we were swimming with about seven or eight sea lions at one point.

We think the sea lions are adorable and wish they could become our pets! Do the sharks ever bump into your boat? Were you able to get close enough to touch a shark? How are you feeling on the boat? Have you been sea sick?

The sea lion pups are very cute. One of our snorkeling locations had been closed however because the alpha males were displaying threatening behaviour towards swimmers. The sharks swam close to the boat but never bumped it, we never touched the sharks. Diane wore a medication patch and neither of us felt sick.

The sea lions came right up to us. We were face to face. You are told not to touch them!
