On our way to Puebla on Monday morning we passed the active volcano Popocatépetl or El Popo as the Mexicans call it. It was hard to get a picture of it in the mist but we could see the steam coming out. Very cool!
Just three days later El Popo erupted. Apparently it oozed ashes and chunks of lava. It would have been great to see that, but I’m glad we were a safe distance away. No one was hurt. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. Note: the explosion video is off of YouTube

Yes it is neat to have seen the steaming volcano. I am also glad we were far away when it had a small eruption.

Since Popocatépetl or El Popo is an active volcano we were wondering how many times does it erupt over a year? How many people are harmed from volanco's in Mexico throughout the year? Have any villages been destroyed from the volcano? How many volancos are there in Mexico?

Since 1519 there have been 15 major eruptions. In the last few years eruptions like the one in the video occur a few times a year. While no one has been injured or killed recently it has caused problems for air traffic. Our guide told us that the villagers have to clean up the fallen ash, especially off cars as it can ruin the paint if left to long.

With 15 major eruptions since 1519 and many small eruptions every year. It blows off steam much of the time.

Why did they call that volcano El Popo

Popocatépetl comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec language) words popōca "it smokes" and tepētl "mountain", meaning Smoking Mountain. El Popo is just a Spanish short nick name taken from it’s proper name.

The last minor eruption was in November. In 2000 a large eruption caused the evacuation of nearby villages.

Do you know how long it takes for it to erupt again?

That is a great question. While it is monitored for activity it is impossible to give any long term predictions. Some feel that it is due another major eruption.
