Older than the Aztec...Older than the Mayan...the Olmec. This colossal Olmec head weighs over eight tons and is at least 3000 years old.
Do you like mysteries? Well, no one is quite sure why they were sculpted. Some experts say these stone heads honoured rulers or ancient ball players. Who do you think they look like? It was a long bus ride to see them but I’m glad we did. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. P.S. I thought you would like to see the banana spider I found yesterday. They look a bit evil but apparently actually help the banana crop. They catch and eat insects that might harm the bananas.

Was the head made in the city/town you visited or was it transported from somewhere else? Also, is the spider venomous/can it hurt humans?

We saw the heads in a town called Villahermosa. They had been brought there from La Venta to preserve them from the oil exploration happening around La Venta. The spider is venomous but for a human a bite would only lead to painful swelling.

Was the head sculpture taller than you? Does it say the names of people that they were sculpted by.

The tallest of the heads at La Venta is almost 3 meters tall. And the shorted around 1.6 meters. The Olmecs did not have a written language but best guess is tat they represent important rulers.

Like most spiders the banana spider goes through many stages. As an adult spider it live only about a month. They have a one year cycle.

The web was about 30 cm wide. i didn’t touch because some varieties of banana spiders bite and apparently your hand can really swell up!
