Ray had a crazy busy last day too! Today he had his first scuba diving lesson ever. He loved it—I don’t think it will be the last. This afternoon we fed the tarpon. These beautiful fish are protected in Belize. If you catch one you have to put it back in the water. They love to jump up and eat delicious sardines. Loving our last unbelizable weather. You are always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

There were a few other fish in the water mostly small fish that were hiding in the mangrove tree roots near the shore.

The fish can reach up to 2.4 meters but theses were mostly 1 meter to 1.5 meters in length.

Was there any other types of sea creatures that you swam with that you thought were cool

One of the things I saw on the scuba dive was arrow crabs. The dive master carefully picked up a small one and then passed it to the other diver who then passed it to me. I was able to gently put him back down by the reef.

Did anyone get their hand bit off. It looks like that fish could.

The Tarpon don't have sharp teeth at the front of their mouths. You are encouraged to keep you hand flat so they can grab the fish and not your fingers. To be honest it was very hard not to pull your hand back as the fish came shooting out of the water.

It is the Caribbean sea so warm even in their colder season. We wore short wet suits for the scuba dive and the water was a little cooler at my deepest part of the dive (25 feet). They encourage you not to touch the wildlife including the coral. The coral has a mucas covering so touching it can be damaging.

We are wondering what type of crab you were holding and why are the tarpon protected in Belize

They were extensivly overfished in the past and so they are trying to bring back the number of Tarpon in the Belize area.

It was a type of hermit crab living in a conch shell. (That is the dive master holding up the shell, she asked us not touch and of the wildlife).
