Xochimilco is one of the sixteen areas in Mexico City. It is made up of artificial islands built in the water. Like in the city of Venice (Italy) the people who live there get around using a series of canals instead of roads. When tourists visit or Mexican families want to relax for the afternoon they go out on boats called Trajineras. Our boat was colourful and had benches to sit on. Smaller boats would come by and sell treats, drinks and flowers. Some boats had bands on them that would play music for you. I got invited to be part of a Mariachi Band. Everyone was so friendly, waving at us and shouting “Hola”. Everything about it made you feel happy inside😄 You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

Diane was picked to play the violin. She was given one note to play in rhythm.

Did you get to drive or steer the boat or was someone else doing it for you?

Each boat had a man who pushed the boat along with a large pole. The canals was very crowded so we did not get to try.

Would you ever do the rope swing you showed in the video?

I get dizzy easily so I don’t think I could do it. The swing was part of a ceremony to mark the end of 52 year cycle. The four men on ropes circle the pole 13 times on the way down. (4x13=52)

Were you safe on the boat without a life jacket?

I felt pretty safe because the water isn’t deep and the boat was really flat and steady. Our boat didn’t have life jackets. I would feel better if it did—you should always wear a life jacket!
