Porto is located on the Duro River and is predominately known for its port wine. However, when I think back to our day in Porto I’m going to remember an infinite amount of blue and white tiles and McDonalds.
The blue and white azulejo tiles are a Portuguese classic. The tradition of glazed blue ceramic tiles began around the 14th century and they are everywhere! We saw them in restaurants, the cathedral and even the train station. It is a good thing I love them or it would be tile overload. And why McDonalds? Well, check out Ray’s video (below), but the McDonalds in Porto is the fanciest I have ever seen. And they sell vegetable soup. Our walking tour guide said that Portugal is the only country where they sell soup, but apparently, that is not completely true—it’s a good story though. We are walking for the next sixteen days starting at the Porto Cathedral. More on that to come. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom.

Did you like the vegetable soup? Was it good? It sounds good but I feel kind of bad that the tour guides didn’t say the truth.

Vegetable soup is good here, but I think it could use a little pepper.

Portions of the wall covered historic scenes. Parts reflected on rural life with pictures of farming, while others showed fishing and other occupations.

We did a walking tour and at the end they gave us a slug of port wine in a paper cup..it tasted sweet and quite nice, but since I don’t usually drink wine I wouldn’t quite know how to compare them.

I have tried the custard tarts a few different places. They are always good but can be slightly different from place to place.

I like the blue tiles too! And knowing the person I am, I would probably get nervous in the McDonalds and spill something.

The station was very crowded and we were with a tour guide the first time through the station. Because of construction on a new subway line we cut through the train station a few more times. The last time through there were a huge crowd dancing in the hall.

There is a game called Azul that is built around these tiles. We need to get the game and try it when you get back. Whoever was last in Portugal goes first!! It's in the rules.

What was the artwork on the tiles, does it represent something?

Yes, that is the waiting room of the train station so you can actually see the train waiting to load in the background

Do you know if all the tiles are handmade? They look very detailed.

Originally they were all hand painted. Like anything else….these days some are mass produced.
