If you walked from Listowel District Secondary School to the Dairy Queen you would walk almost exactly the width of Victoria Falls. Although it is neither the widest or the deepest waterfall in the world, it is considered the largest because of the volume of water that pours over it. Because of the recent rainfall the Falls are very powerful right now. We got very, very wet from the mist alone. The best view of the Falls is from up in the air. So, of course we took a helicopter over the Falls this afternoon. Absolutely incredible! You Are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom. Super Sevens and Great Eights Today it is Robert Mugabe birthday..... Today we flew to Zimbabwe. Our evening cruise on the Zambezi River could not have been more perfect. We snacked on treats as the sun set. Grunting hippos kept popping out of the water. Colourful birds perched on the trees beside the river. Such a special family day. We thought of you all back home.
You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom. The Sun is out in Blyde River Canyon. Blyde River means River of Joy. It is a beautiful Saturday in South Africa and we are feeling that joy.
We are still having stormy weather here in Kruger National Park. Apparently the elephants are loving the cloud and rain because we saw tons of them. One herd had at least thirty. Can you see the tourist in the middle? I think she is taking a selfie--not smart!
So, we didn't see the leopard and lion to complete our Big Five. We did see what our guide called the ugly five: hyena, crocodile, warthog, Malibu stork, and wildebeest. Still an amazing day😄 You are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom. This morning we were scheduled to deliver the shoes and school supplies to the Swaziland school. Cyclone Dino had other plans. The powerful rains and winds coming off the Indian Ocean made the roads impassable. Although it would have been lovely to meet the students, safety comes first. Leonard, a representative of the school, was able to meet us at the glass factory and pick up the items. He says a big thank you!
Ngwenya glass factory was probably my favourite activity today. The gifted artists at the factory turn recycled glass into African animals, birds and fish. Dad bought an elephant (of course) and you will be able to see it when we get back. This is a project where everyone wins. Glass gets recycled. People get jobs. Beautiful things are created. It is still very wet, but we are safely at a nice hotel back in South Africa. You are Always in my Prayers. Love Mom. Today was another early start. Before the sun was up we headed to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. When we got there we loaded up in a game vehicle and headed off, with the help of a ranger, to search for animals. Our guide was a lot of fun. He would only stop the vehicle if we whispered hallelujah when we found an animal. We were so excited that it was hard to whisper, but there were a lot of hallelujahs😄
Within 10 minutes we had found four rhinos! We had huge smiles on our faces the whole day. My favourite were the giraffes. They are not part of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino) but they are so much fun to watch when they move. I took hundreds of pictures so there are way to many to post. So here is the deal.....you can pick one more animal from today's list and I will post it tomorrow. Your Choices: rhino, warthog, cape buffalo, more giraffes, dung beetle (pushing a big ball of poop), zebra So now we have two of the Big Five. We are still hoping to see a lion and an elephant. Leopards are hard to find. You Are Always in My Prayers. Love Mom. Great Eights and Super Sevens We are now in Swaziland. It is not a democracy, but apparently the people speak well of their king. He is very wealthy and has fifteen wives. Many of the people are very poor. Would a democracy change the balance?
